Culshaw’s Grill, Adelaide

This winter cold snap isn’t doing anyone any favours I say! *Sniff*

Caught up with a girlfriend over dinner at Culshaw’s Grill, the Majestic Hotel restaurant located on Frome St. The restaurant is relatively small and cozy, and the wait staff are friendly and accommodating as we take our seats.

Seeing as it is a habit of mine to peruse through the menu through the web before going to the restaurant, I had an inkling as to what I was to order already! Might I add, the menu sounds and looks incredibly appealing so expectations are set kinda high.

culshaw's grill, salt, potato and garlic mash
Salt, Potatoes and garlic mash; $5.50

Major let down; lumpy lumpy mash with a massive hit of garlic.

culshaw's grill, prawn risotto, kangaroo
Garlic prawn risotto with saffron, lemon thyme and champagne cream finished with gremolata and a parmesan crisp; $27.90
Chargrilled chilli marinated kangaroo fillet on a tartlet of braised red onion and capsicum with a blueberry glaze; $28.90

The risotto was flavourless and gluggy which needed a hefty amount of salt added just to give the dish some flavour. Every now and then N would hit a spot where there was no cream/ sauce on a chunk of arborio rice. The parmesan crisp – not so crisp!

My kangaroo fair better in terms of taste and texture. The kangaroo fillets cooked just right, the blueberry glaze was sweet and flavoursome. As the menu suggests, the kangaroo is marinated in chilli however I could not taste it, either it was really really mild, my taste buds have gone haywire, or there was no marinade there. The capsicum and onion tart added another much needed dimension to the dish in terms of texture and flavour, although I found the tart crust to be rather dry and crumbly.

Next course, dessert! And the one item that stood out to us was the Swiss white chocolate mousse. As we place our order for the dessert, our waiter is confused and unsure if the restaurant served this particular item. Not until we show the waiter the menu is she convinced and hurries back to place our order in.

culshaw's grill, white chocolate mousse, dessert
Swiss white chocolate and lavender mousse with crystallised violet and fresh strawberries; $15.90

What a let down. The dessert has been pre made and looks unappetising. The mousse is thick and resembles the consistency of a heavy cream. The candied lavender are more like clumps of purple sugar candied lavender plonked on top of the “mousse”, whilst I imagined them to still be in the shape of lavender, and the fresh strawberries are, well… fresh. You can’t go wrong with fresh strawberries, or can you?!

Great catch up with N but rather disappointed with the food and the sub par service.

Shame about the dishes, especially the dessert, as it sounds like it could have been nice if made properly!
