Montezuma’s, North Adelaide

I’ve only ever had Mexican food at a legitimate Mexican restaurant once, and it wasn’t particularly memorable. But having said that, it was years ago and I’m ready to give it another shot!

montezuma's

There’s gotta be more than nachos and burritos yeah? Lets’ see!

montezuma's, chilli verde, mole poblano
Chilli Verde: prime chunks of pure beef steak, simmered with onions, spices, herbs, green capsicum, garnished with jalapeno sauce and cheese. Served on a bed of Spanish rice; $14.95

Meh, I found the beef chunks to be tough and overcooked, spices overpowering and Spanish rice dry and bordering on hard.

Mole Poblano: centuries old chicken dish invented by nuns of Puebla for the bishops visit, served with a spicy Aztec sauce, 32 herbs and spices, coconut, banana and pineapple; $18.95

A confusing dish of flavours! Sweet banana with chicken and rice? Um… I’m not sure. I’m all for pairing sweet and salty together (think salted caramel!), but not with this dish.

Wasn’t a huge fan of Mexican food prior to this, and still not a huge fan after this. Someone, prove me otherwise? Suggestions on places I should try? Or dishes that I should order? Hmph!

Food: 2/5
Service: 2/5 – Slow and wish washy. One person in the kitchen and the one waiter, lunch hour with very few people.
Value: 3/5
Ambience: 2/5

      Hey Amanda,

Thanks for dropping by and commenting! It’s nice to know that someone out there in cyberspace is reading this. πŸ™‚

Maybe I should give it another go with a larger group of people, resulting in more dishes to try! (And maybe a jug of Sangria too, that should put everyone in good spirits!)

Cha Chi’s? I’ve never heard of them but it’s now on my radar. Thanks for the suggestion! – Just did a quick google search, the reviews look promising!

Montezumas is the bomb! Sorry you had a bad experience. Their chicken burritos are kickass, but mostly their nachos and margheritas are the best.

I find that when it comes to mexican, stick to what you know, because you know you’ll enjoy it! Hope you give it another shot!

      Thanks for the comment Amy!

I hear that Mexican food in America is to die for and nothing comes close in Australia. Maybe a trip to the States should be on the cards! Heh.

Margarita! Now that, I can give a go… as for the burrito… I’ll have a look into it. I hear great things about Zapata’s as well, might give that a shot further down the track. πŸ™‚
