After receiving an email/suggestion from a reader to try out Shanker’s (specialises in South Indian cuisine), I quickly performed a google search to suss the place out. Expectations were quite high given that Shanker’s have won the following awards over the last two years:
- 2010 Winner – I Love Food Awards; Australia’s Favourite Indian Eat-Out – Lifestyle Food Channel,
- 2009 Winner – I Love Food Awards; Best Asian Restaurant in SA – Lifestyle Food Channel
- 2009 Messenger Local Business Awards Finalist – Best Formal Dining

I briefly mentioned my new findings to N, who got quite curious and more than willing to join me for dinner and to satisfy both our curiosities. We agreed on a date, and fortunately for us, the weather on the night was quite cool and slightly chilly, which I think is perfect hot curry weather!
We are greeted by the friendly staff when we arrive who lead us to our table. We take a good few minutes deliberating over the menu in amongst our catch up session and decide on the following:
Steamed Basmati rice; $4.00
Prawn Tikka Masala (medium): Masala fresh prawns simmered on a base of vibrant blended spices, tomato paste, crisp capsicum, thick onion gravy & tinged with fresh yoghurt; $18.00
Beautiful, strong curry flavours with a nice combination of textures with juicy prawns and crisp capsicum.
Yoghurt Salad of diced cucumber and carrot with natural yoghurt, $6.00
We thought we’d take a precaution and order a yoghurt just in case the curries are too hot to handle! The yoghurt salad is cool and refreshing.
Plain naan: a North Indian bread baked in the tandoor; $3.50
Chicken Vindaloo (hot): tender pieces of chicken cooked with tomato, ground spices and hot chillies; $16.50
I found this curry to be slightly watery and not as thick as what I’m used to. The chicken pieces were perfectly tender and flavourful. Was the ‘hot’ vindaloo hot you ask? There was a slight tingle of heat on my palate but it failed to hit me in the face as I was hoping. (I have this weird thing for hot food, but then again, maybe I’m just the odd one out with a strange and abnormal palate!)
Overall, not bad.. but not the best. N and I continue our night out with more eatings with curried up bellies… next stop, DESSERT! Stay tuned!
