The Store has always been one of my go-to places on Melbourne Street for their lunches but after having breakfast over the weekend, I don’t think I’ll be running back anytime soon – keep reading, you’ll find out why.
A trio of us got together for an early morning catch up over breakfast and scored ourselves a table outside taking advantage of the warm weather and friendly bustling atmosphere. It also gave me a chance to people watch (heh!) – my favourite are the ones with fluffy companions like in the picture below. How cute is that fluffy dog with a stick in his mouth waiting patiently at the red light?! SO. CUTE.
Our waiter took our order of breakfast items, coffees and juice and a bottle of table water while we chit chatted away catching up on the happenings over the past few months… pst, congrats L on the bling bling! 🙂
We waited for 15 minutes or so and still no table water or cutlery in sight and we tried to flag down a waiter to enquire about said beverages but all attempts failed.
Eggs benedict: poached eggs and leg ham with Hollandaise on buttered muffins; $15.00
Pancakes with smoked salmon
Poached eggs with beetroot and ricotta, sautéed baby spinach, dukkah on toasted bread; $15.00
5 to 10 minutes later, our table water finally arrived but the wait for our breakfasts continued. The first to arrive were the eggs benedict and still, none of us have our cutlery. Another 5 to 10 minutes followed with 2 plates coming out, both of which were wrong orders or are for other customers. Due to the mix up, another waiter approaches us to confirm our orders whilst N’s eggs benedict goes cold while she waits for all our meals to come so we can eat at the same time. During this time, our 2 coffees finally arrive but still no juice in sight. Once our correct breakfasts arrive, we all begin to dig in! Shame about N’s meal going cold. 🙁
My poached eggs with beetroot and ricotta… what a sight. The colours were crazily intense and contrasting – I must admit, I was a bit thrown off by the intensity of the colour palate but still slowly dug my into my meal. The poached eggs were cooked beautifully as I cut into it and its golden lava drizzled over the beetroot, ricotta, spinach and toasted bread. The beetroot was sweet but the ‘mash’ was chunky with a few cubes of beetroot that survived the mashing process but they didn’t survive me. Overall, an okay breakfast but nothing worth raving on about.
Oh, and that juice! After L finished her pancakes and having to ask a passing waiter about the forgotten juice, she finally received it and not a moment sooner as she was parched and needed something to wash down her brekky!
The Store bought us okay breakfasts, mixed up and forgotten orders, and slow service. Not a great way to start off our mornings but at least the company very well made up for it! BTW, safe travels N!!! Will miss you. 🙂
