All you can eat Korean BBQ? So. There.
Charcoal Hwaro Korean BBQ restaurant slash butcher shop is off Grote Street on Pitt Street (turn off at the lights on Grote St/Her Majesty’s Theatre corner) next door to a carpark. The shopfront isn’t all that inviting nor does it look like a big place, but once inside, the restaurant is quite spacious with lots of seating available and the smell of grilled and sizzling meat is sure to set those taste buds going!
At $29.99 per person, the price is kinda steep considering the limited cuts of meat available and a handful of salad and pickled vegetable choices. That, and if you’re not a huge eater (ie. me) but I guess it’s all part of the experience. On top of the $29.99 charge per person, there’s also drinks and a penalty of $5.00 per head for any food wastage! Other ‘rules’ include the changing of the grill plate, once charred, they are swapped for new plates; the first two are free and from thereafter, it’s $1.00 per change. Oh, there’s also a time limit of 1 hour 40 minutes per table. Unsure if they charge you extra for staying over the specified time limit, cause we stayed a bit longer and there was a slight discrepancy with our total bill that we just brushed it over and left, but best to check/ask beforehand I say!
The food was ok, beef LA ribs being the favourite amongst our quartet. Service was poor with the owner and waitresses constantly hovering over us and prodding at us to eat whilst we were having a ‘break’ and an empty grill. We felt uncomfortable and rushed, not quite the dining experience one is after on a late Friday night after a long week of work!
Honestly, I thought it was all quite expensive, poor service made for an unsatisfying meal and our clothes and hair were permeated with the smell of grilled meat for the rest of the night.
