By Blackbird, a new pastry and dessert cafe to add on to Adelaide’s growing list of dessert places, is owned by pastry chef – Chakey Kim who’s had baking experience at ‘Fleischer Cakes‘ and is the founder of ‘Au Matin Calme‘. Having been to Au Matin Calme before and being impressed with their desserts and hearing great things about their pastries and tarts, I knew C and I were in for a treat after our meal at the Greek on Halifax.

We’re the first ones to arrive for the night and make our way inside to avoid the brazen cold. The cafe is small and dimly lit with a mixture of furniture with a large red sofa at the front shop window that they call the ‘Snapshot Sofa’ where staff interact with their customers and take photos which are then posted on their Facebook page.
Pastries, pies and quiches are baked fresh daily with a small selection of desserts on offer at night. Veneziano coffee, French Marriage Freres tea and some unique Korean teas make up their beverage selection. Pastry chef Chakey also makes her own special hot chocolate blend using Belgian chocolate with optional flavours of raspberry and orange.

C’s chosen tea cup – yeah that’s right, they let you pick what cup you want your tea in.
The draw card that got us planning a visit to By Blackbird after drooling over a picture of it on Facebook:
Winter delight: poached apple, vanilla mousse wrapped in crepe
So pretty. And so good too! Soft delicate crepe encasing a sweet tender poached apple with a creamy light vanilla mousse. Yeah. Sold! Get in quick cause they won’t long!
Pretty huh? It tasted as good as it looked – just slightly on the too sweet side for our palates.
Solid start up thus far but very limited on the dessert options. I look forward to returning and trying out their pastries, most notably their croissants and pies!
