Girl’s night out at Press* Food & Wine a few weekends ago hoping N will be impressed and that it’ll live up to the hype that the majority of us have been raving on about to her. We attempted to make a booking earlier in the week but no luck, upstairs was completely booked out for the night but downstairs caters for walk ins so an early arrival would most likely ensure us a spot. We arrived early-ish and snagged a spot on one of their long communal tables with high bar stool chairs near the front bar and kitchen. The decor was rustic with an industrial modern touch, the large open space had light bulbs dangling from the tall ceiling, dark walls with pops of green and red from small pot plants and random knick knacks sitting on a small shelf along one of the walls.
Chorizo, choka sauce; $15.00
We started off with some bread and chorizo; we were hoping to get a serving of their popular croquettes but unfortunately none were available during our visit! The chorizo had lots of flavour, lots of spice and a nice kick of heat. It definitely got our taste buds going, a nice start to our epic meal ahead!
Gravlax of salmon, creme fraiche, dill and mustard dressing; $18.00
Our second starter was quite the opposite to our first: gravlax of salmon. It was incredibly light and subtle, the salmon literally melted away with each bite, I just wish there was a bit more mustard dressing to give it an extra kick.
House-made pappardelle, blue swimmer crab, tomato and chilli; $29.00
The only pasta dish on the menu and what an amazingly delicious one at that! The house-made pasta was thin, delicate and aldente; each strand was covered evenly with the rich sauce with hints of crab meat, tomato and chilli. Bellissimo! 😛
The/my hero dish for the night: Press’ famous steak!
Organic charolais rib eye with trimmings (serves 2) 750g; $89.00
Cooked medium rare, seasoned perfectly with a slight char grill on the outside, all 750g worth of beef, WITH trimmings of creamy mash, aioli and salad. The menu suggests that it serves 2 people, but this fed our quartet of girls for the evening easily! We finished it, although we did struggle a bit. Heh! So tender, so flavourful, so good. When a steak gets cooked right, it is so right!!
Shoestring fries; $8.50
Press* delivers once again, great food, attentive and friendly service and most importantly, great company! N gives Press* the double thumbs up! 🙂
