Sooo… a huge group of us dropped in to the Hilton Hotel on the corner of South Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive a few weeks back for their famous ‘burger’ having won the ‘Best pub burger in SA’ back in 2011. With such a title, expectations were obviously high but many of us were left underwhelmed and baffled at how the burger even won the accolade. :/
HILTON 5 STAR WAYGU BURGER
300g Wagyu beef burger with double smoked bacon, free range egg, onion jam, cheese, lettuce and tomato – accompanied by mustard, tomato relish, aioli and sliced pickles with chilli and rosemary chips; $19.90
Look at it, it’s HUGE. Ladies, if you’re wanting to give this burger a go, I highly suggest you share it with someone! The hero of the burger was supposed to be the wagyu beef but instead that was the downfall of the entire meal (at least that was what a handful of us thought). The patty was dry, crumby and over seasoned with herbs and spices that overpowered any of the beef flavour. My egg was overcooked (no runny yolk!) whilst when I looked at every else’s burger, their yolks were runny and golden. Hmph! The individual shot glasses of condiments were presented in individual shot glasses which is… different (almost unnecessary – I thought). The chips were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside with a very subtle hit of chilli and rosemary – nice and different.
Not the best pub burger in SA, not for us at least. This years ‘Best pub burger in SA 2012’ went to the Alma Tavern, but after having a taste of 2011’s winner… I’m a bit skeptical to try it!
