Girls night out at First Lounge Bar and Restaurant located upstairs at Hotel Richmond on Rundle Mall. I’m sure many Adelaidians have passed this venue without taking a second glance of it! 😛 Given that there was a large group of us, a set menu was in place with a small selection available for our choosing.
Picks for the night:
Paella: chorizo, roast capsicum, SA prawns, mussels, calamari; $25.00
300 msa sirloin riverine 120 day aged grain fed msa served with cafe de paris, shoestring fries & mixed leaf salad; $32.00
rotolo lasagne: roast capsicum, olive tapenade, pea mash; $24.00
The paella failed to have a crusty base along with the mussels being so overcooked that the meat shrivelled into a small chewy ball of rubbery meat (ick!); but having said that, the rest of the dish was fine with strong mediterranean flavours shining through. The steak was a clear favourite on the table with over half opting for the sirloin but not much was said about it so I’m going to take a punt and say that it was okay. 😛 So the roast pumpkin rotolo was not meant to be and they changed the dish to be a roast pumpkin lasagne instead with the same ingredients. It was a nice serving size with strong flavours from the roast capsicum and olive tapenade which overpowered the dish for me. I was hoping for more roast pumpkin to shine through cause after all, that was the hero of the meal; I also question whether there was any pea mash in my lasagne cause I didn’t see any!
Mains were okay, it did it’s job with satisfying us but not enough to steer us away from dessert!
Vanilla parfait layered with mango and raspberry; $10.00
Tarte aux pommes served with vanilla bean ice cream; $10.00
Churros: cinnamon sugar spiced with chocolate sauce; $10.00
Nothing too exciting with our options for the night. We assumed that the parfait was going to be presented into a small glass but instead, they were thin slices of vanilla parfait layered with mango that just happened to be melting at a rapid rate into a large puddle of… vanilla and mango parfait! The tarte aux pommes didn’t get that much love from people who ordered it either, slices of apples on puff pastry, a scoop of ice cream and a dusting of cinnamon sugar. I had the churros and they were not good. Fat, stumpy and short things they were; and heavily dusted in a coating of cinnamon hence why they look so dark!! Need a churros fix in Adelaide? I vouch for Churros Oz, best churros in Adelaide to date, now go find that truck!
First at Hotel Richmond serves your standard fanfare of a pub meal which is overpriced in my books! It’s a lovely spot for a night out with friends for a drink or some boogying on the dance floor, but as for the food, I’d take the extra effort and make my way down Rundle Street for a better feed that’s worth your dollar.
