PUBLIC, Adelaide

Casual dining at PUBLIC during their only dinner service for the week, Friday nights. This cafe, bar and function space on Franklin Street (right next to the Aus Post building, adjacent Victoria Square) is eclectic mix of ‘old and new’. The interior, inspired by public spaces has features from old railway stations and grand libraries; the huge old clock being a main feature of the space. The space is long and narrow with floor to ceiling window panes letting in plenty of natural light and allowing patrons to window watch whilst sipping on their coffees early in the AM or enjoying a glass of red or a ice cold beer during the evenings on Friday nights.

Bent Creek ‘Black Dog’ Shiraz – Adelaide Hills; $9.50
‘PFC’: Public fried chicken with chilli aioli; $9.00
Asahi battered onion rings; $6.50

On our visit, we were more intrigued by their bar menu than their surprise menu for that evening. PFC and onion rings to start. The PFC wasn’t executed very well with the meat being overcooked, chewy, dry and the PFC itself was quite salty, even with the chilli aioli. The onion rings were better; they were sweet, crispy and light – the perfect bar snack to team up with a beer. 😉

Meal deal: any two burgers and fries; $17.00

We ordered the meal deal and chose the pork belly with pickled carrot and chilli along with the wagyu with lime mayo and caramelised onion. Nice little burgers although the other accompaniments of the burgers didn’t really play up on my palate.

Half shell scallops with peas
Half shell scallops with sweet corn and prosciutto (3); $12.00

A little mix up with our order on the scallops. We ordered the scallops with sweet corn but received the one with peas instead. Not until after I took the photo did we realise that we got the wrong dish. We quickly notified the waitstaff and our correct dish came out shortly after. Not bad, although I found it a bit salty with the added prosciutto and not enough corn to balance out the flavours. Note to self, order scallops only if they’re pan seared or sashimi style.
