Bar 9, Parkside

Happy 1st of July everyone! Today marks the first day of the new financial year, the first day to the last half of 2013 and the first day of Mushroom Mania month! Mushroom Mania is run by Australian Mushroom Growers every July to highlight the amazing mushroom dishes on offer at cafés, bistros, clubs, pubs and restaurants across Australia. I have been invited to review 2 local eateries this month by the folks at Mushroom Mania on… you guessed it, a mushroom dish! Having said that, you don’t have to be a blogger to take part in mushroom mania month, you can join in and be in the chance to win a $100 restaurant voucher. Details at the bottom of this post.

Just a few minutes outside of the city on Glen Osmond Road is a shop turned specialty coffee bar and cafe: Bar 9. With close to 4,000 likes on Facebook, over 3,000 followers on Twitter and a 91% rating from 385 votes on urbanspoon (at the time of this published post); Bar 9 is obviously doing something right with their coffee and food!

After discovering this super popular haunt just outside of the city a few weeks ago and had my taste buds and mind blown from the deliciousness, I knew I had to bring the stranger along and treat his taste buds to the same thing.

Little Golden Books – ‘Me Cookie!’ book turned Bar 9 menu. Super cute!

We arrived to a full house at Bar 9 with most of the tables, communal tables and window benches full with weekend brunchers and lunchers. I already knew what delectable delight I was having so I let the stranger take his time to look over the menu and specials on offer before he settled on the Australian Blue Swimmer Crab.

We sipped on our coffees and caught up with our social networking and news over our smart evil anti social phones whilst we waited for our meals. It was a rather lengthy wait for our food as the place was rather busy but all was forgiven once it arrived.

Now, onto the good stuff!

My creamy truffled mushroom ragu.

Creamy truffled mushroom ragu; $18.00

A mound of creamy truffled mushroom ragu on toast with poached eggs and finished with truffle honey. Delightfully delicious! The thinly sliced button mushrooms were cooked well, not soggy but still firm and juicy in a creamy and flavourful ragu that coated each slice evenly. The dish was rich but not overly heavy with a hint of truffle honey that I actually wanted more of as it hinted a sweetness across my palette. Texture was a huge component of the dish: crusty toasted bread, firm meaty slices of mushrooms, perfectly cooked poached eggs with a golden creamy runny yolk and freshness and crunch from the sprigs of watercress on top. A wonderfully delicious and healthy meal as mushrooms are packed with Vitamin B and D, very low in kilojoules and energy density and are known to be filling and dampen appetites at subsequent meals! Now that’s a win win for me especially during these colder months as I don’t get enough sunlight as it is and it is also that time of the year where I tend to eat/snack more as my body wants to stay warm. More fat, more warmth? 😛

Australian blue swimmer crab green curry scramble with Asian greens; $17.00 plus a side of Berkshire bacon rashes from San Jose Smallgoods, Adelaide Plains +$4.50

The stranger’s crab green curry scramble was just as delightful. Light airy scrambled eggs with subtle hints of green curry and fresh crisp coriander, spring onions and chilli on top. Yum! I think we could have done without the bacon though. 😉

Now we all know how Adelaide is small, so it was no surprise that we bumped into some friends whilst we were at Bar 9 after they spied my picture of the creamy mushroom ragu on my first visit and they too, had to try it out! They recommended the zucchini dish on the specials menu; and after spying many muesli jars leaving the kitchen, I think it won’t be long til I come back and give my taste buds another treat. That is, if the creamy mushroom ragu doesn’t win me over again!

Completely satisfied and appetite sated with the stranger in agreement that the food and coffee was good. Real good! 😉
