Weekend bites: Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill in 77 and The Playford Restaurant

Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill

Shop front counter,
Habanero hombre burrito: grilled steak, black beans, coriander & lime rice, onion & capsicum, salsa fresca, sour cream and habanero salsa; $10.95
Mexicrinkles; $3.30
2 x soft tacos; $7.95 – carnitas: slow cooked pork with pineapple and mango salsa, a squeeze of lime juice and pinch of coriander, chicken chipotle: grilled chicken, salsa fresca, guacamole with a chipotle salsa

Dropped into the brand spankin’ new food court aka 77 Your Place to Eat Rundle Place for some finger lickin’ good crinkle cut chips (and some sides of a burrito and tacos, the role reversal of foods hehe)! For those of you who declare that Chicken Chef have the best hot chips—you know who you are, then you need to give these potato chips a go! Incredibly crispy with a light a soft potato centre, each chip is tossed and covered in a super secret spice that makes them taste better than better! More flavour, more kick and the best part of it all, the chips weren’t even greasy! They’re so darn awesome that they even have their own name: Mexicrinkles. Mmmm~

The Playford Restaurant

Fine dining and wining with friends using the FOF one last time. 🙂

Entree tasting plate

A cold entree tasting platter to start; we worked our way from left to right, the first being the black sesame taro with green apple and mint. A dense bite with some green apple and mint to lighten and add freshness to ones palate. The shot of prawn and spanner crab gumbo had a bit more gusto with intense flavour and scent of the sea with diced banana chilli pieces on top for some heat. The puffed wheat where the shot glass was surrounded by provided a nice, light and toasty crunch. Finally, a piece of hot and spicy soy glazed quail, master stock gel and ginger salsa to conclude the entree tasting plate. I would have much preferred it if the quail was served hot instead of cold but regardless, it was my favourite out of the trio. The meat was firm and moist accompanied by a sweet and flavourful master stock gel and some spice and freshness from the ginger salsa with paprika powder used at our discretion. I swiped it clean!

King salmon fillet, warm new potatoes, horseradish crème and citrus spiced beetroot
Braised beef pie, pea puree, triple cooked chips, truffle aioli and bacon powder
Organic cup gum honey paddle pop, cacao and hokey pokey

I think my main of salmon was the winner for the night. It was cooked beautifully, the flesh was still pink and incredibly moist with a golden crispy thin skin. The plate had vibrant colours and flavours with the citrus spiced beetroot complementing the fish extremely well with an added juicy crunch. The pie was a blunder for the two that ordered it; the edges of the pie were black and burnt and the braised beef centre filling was super dry and tasteless. On the other hand, the triple cooked chips and truffle aioli were outstanding, the gourmet chips were incredibly crispy and ‘potato-y’ with a soft moist centre paired with an amazingly rich and can’t-be-good-for-your-thighs truffle aioli. We ordered sides of honey glazed carrots and a creamy potato mash to up our veggie intake for the evening. Heh! The carrots went down a treat however they were on the greasy side with each carrot coated in oil leaving behind a mini pool in the bowl, the mash was much the same with too much butter that it seeped out of the mash from the top. :/

We concluded the evening with a mini organic cup gum honey paddle pop each. Gone in the blink of an eye, creamy, rich, not overwhelmingly sweet with welcomed crunch of cacao and hokey pokey. Yum! Short, simple and sweet.
