Benny’s American Take Away has been on my radar ever since I spied pics of the eatery popping up on my instagram feed and urbanspoon, it quickly went on my growing list of ‘places to eat’. Fast forward a couple of months and me not making time to pay Benny’s a visit yet, Craig, one of the owners of Benny’s got in contact with me and sent out an invite to attend their VIP night with the take away shop introducing a new menu as well as a monster food challenge – Man vs Food anyone?
Display of baseball caps with American sport teams
The stranger was completely on board with the VIP night and upon arrival, he was like a kid in a candy store. Hot dogs? Check. Chicken wings? Check. Fries? Check. Beer? Check. And the one that completely sealed the deal for him. NBA basketball streaming on the big screen in store? BIG. FAT. CHECK. The take away shop was small and seated a handful but with a short and simple menu and with the food at more than affordable prices, you wouldn’t expect anything more.
Budweiser and herb and garlic chicken wings
The herb and garlic chicken wings came straight out of the fryer, they were piping hot with a super crunchy batter that led way to a moist and flavourful meat.
‘Not so hot’ chicken wings; 3 wings $3.00, 6 wings $6.00, 10 wings $9.00, 15 wings $12.00 and 30 wings $15.00
These chicken wings came in three different spice levels: not so hot, hot and really hot. We had a cone of ‘not so hot’ chicken wings and they were finger lickin’ good, the sauce that they were covered in had a really nice kick of spice and were exactly as described, ‘not so hot’.
Pulled pork hot dogs; hot dogs range from $4.00-$9.00

Food challenge: 2kg chicken wings, 1kg fries and 1ltr milkshake
There was a food challenge on the VIP night with 4 participants tackling a platter of 2kg chicken wings, 1kg fries and a litre of milkshake. Quite entertaining although I did feel full watching them tackle the monster platter… and maybe a little bit sick too. All that food in the one sitting cannot be good for you! Haha >.< The staff were incredibly friendly, personable and welcoming, it almost felt like I was at my mates house just chilling over some simple American food and catching some bball on the big screen. The food was simple and prices are cheap but the location of Blackwood might be a drive for some folks! Their menu offerings include a wide selection of hotdogs, sandwiches, chicken wings, ribs, pulled pork, poutines, sides of fries (french fries, chilli cheese fries and garlic fries), gravy, nuggets and coleslaw; all of which can be washed down with sodas and/or a milkshake (classic flavours of chocolate, strawberry, caramel and vanilla or more specialty ones like choc mint and bounty).
