The Pantry on Egmont, Hawthorn

Brunch date at the very popular Pantry on Egmont (sister cafe/restaurant to Ginger’s Coffee Studio Vintage Lounge Bar on Goodwood Road) a few weeks back with these foodies. The cafe was a bit of a ‘trek’ for me as I’m usually in the northern and western burbs of the city but hey, guaranteed coffee will almost get me anywhere around Adelaide. The Pantry on Egmont is situated in the burbs of Hawthorn (I didn’t even know we had a suburb called Hawthorn in SA – hehe!) opposite train tracks and neighbours to a handful of small shops along the strip.

The cafe was packed on arrival with patrons inside and outside the premises taking advantage of the glorious weather. The cafe was fitted with retro furnishings of old school chairs and tables, books and even a boxed analog tv underneath the front counter and artwork on the walls.

Expectations of the food were high based on the ratings on Urbanspoon. Both my eating buddies ordered the garden breakfast (one substituting for rye bread) whilst I couldn’t go past the smashed avocado.

My smashed avocado (which was hidden underneath) was accompanied with grilled haloumi, tomato chutney and topped with poached eggs and sourdough toast. The watercress was a nice surprise for some colour and freshness. A nice combination of colour, textures and flavours but overall, my breakfast was okay. Just okay. Not bad, but not smashingly good. Decent.

I get the a-okay from both garden breakfasters as well but we all agree that brunch wasn’t one where we’d be rushing back to try again soon. At least I get to tick this place off my list – a rather odd and sweet satisfaction I get when I cross things off a list(!) – I can’t be the only one. 🙂

Service was relaxed and friendly – always a bonus, and the food fresh and locally sourced. Breakfast and lunch served all day right up until 3pm with a variety of freshly squeezed juices, varieties of loose leaf tea and coffee.
