Whilst being in Sydney, I made it a mission to check out Black Star Pastry in Newtown for their famed watermelon cake, but because I didn’t want to start our morning with dessert, I turned to Urbanspoon and found this cafe nearby and thought that it’d be the perfect place to have a savoury start to our morning.
We caught the train to Newtown station and just oustide the station sat this quirky cafe. Like our visit to Devon Cafe, we came at an odd time during the day avoiding all peak hour commuters. Woo! The cafe had an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ feel through its interior and decor with bright teal plush sofa/bench seating lining the walls, brass trimmings, a huge cuckoo clock hanging from the ceiling and mirrored walls. Cuckoo Callay oozed a very playful and whimsical environment, surely a nice way to start off any morning…
But first… coffee!
Our appetites were off to a slow start that morning so we opted to share this between the two of us along with a coffee each.

Honestly, I didn’t think the serving size was ‘enough’ but surprisingly, between the both of us, we were quite content and was on the borderline of being ‘full’ after we were done with it! A thick disc of crispy bubble and squeak hash brown with a soft centre of cooked potato took precedence on the plate with a perfectly poached egg perched on top with a sprinkle of pepper and chives. A generous smear of smooth pea puree, the tastiest marinated chunky avocado we’ve had in a long time and slices of house cured salmon (from choices of bacon steak, house cured salmon or grilled haloumi) completed our breakfast plate. Delicious! Most of my favourite breakfast ingredients (poached egg, smoked salmon, avo) were on that plate so I was one happy chap! Mama bear was quite impressed too although she did let me have all the smoked salmon as she doesn’t do raw food – unless it’s freshly shucked oysters, then that’s another ball game!

Awesome spot for coffee and food in the hipster suburb of Newtown! I’ll be sure to make a revisit next time I’m in town and in the area. 🙂
