After mopping up the #Hashtag browns 2.0 at Cuckoo Callay close to the Newtown train station, we made our way on foot to Black Star Pastry to feast on their delectable, instagrammable and drool worthy cakes!
But first… where was Black Star Pastry?? We were on the right street… we just couldn’t figure out which cafe/bakery to walk into… that was until we walked past it and I turned around and saw the sign! Woooo, it was facing in the opposite direction from where we came from. 😛
Black Star Pastry is quite small; a simple set up with a counter, coffee machine, refridgerated dessert cabinet and a few seats available inside against the front window. There was also some seating outside should one wish to enjoy the yumminess on site, else take away is the way to go. 😉
I already knew what I was getting when we got there… THIS!
The famed strawberry watermelon cake with rose scented cream
Even it’s prettiness couldn’t stop us from devouring the slice. The signature cake was fresh, extremely light and fragrant with two layers of almond dacquoise, fresh whipped cream, watermelon, strawberries, Iranian pistachios and rose petals. The variety of flavours and textures worked brilliantly together, especially the light fluffy almond dacquoise paired with smooth fresh whipped cream with bursts of summery freshness from the watermelon chunks and strawberries and a welcomed crunch from the vibrant light green pistachios and delicate pink rose petals. Why so awesome?! I really wanted to buy a few slices to take back home to Adelaide but unfortunately, the cake requires refrigeration. I’ll just have to come back and take the stranger with me soon… soon!
And then there was a pretty pastel purple cloud that caught our attention in the cabinet…
Taro chiffon cake
I knew I had to get a slice for mama bear as she’s a lover for all things taro.
It was splendid. Ethereally light and airy, just like how I’d imagine a cloud to be. There was a strong flavour of taro permeating throughout each bite with a coating of lavender tinted coconut flakes on the outside. UN-REAL. So damn tasty that we got an extra slice for the road—no refridgeration required. 😉
So glad we made our way here with our tastebuds commending us for the effort. Haha! We’ll be back!
