It was about time that I made my way there and try out our states most iconic food icon, the Pie Floater which is also recognised as a South Australian Heritage Icon by the National Trust of Australia. Who knew?! Yes, that’s what Wiki tells me anyway. Yeah yeah, it’s taken me this long to try out this famous food offering, but like they say, better late than never right?

Pie floater with meat pie and tomato sauce; $6.80

I stuck with the basics and got the original and traditional meat pie with tomato sauce. The meat pie was turned upside down and submerged within a pool of mushed up green pea soup… it wasn’t exactly floating… more so drowning in the green slop. Not the most appetising thing right? But looks aside, the pie floater itself wasn’t so bad! At $6.80, it’s pretty good value for money I thought. The 2 tomato heart sauces were indeed a life saver for an extra layer of sweetness and punch to the overall meal. The pea is pretty one dimensional in terms of texture with the odd chunky piece here and there, but it was seasoned well and the hidden pie was tasty with a piping hot centre of meat filling. Beware on burning your tongue when eating! Personally, I would have preferred each element to be individual and on the side, that way, the pie’s pastry and crust is still crispy, intact and not soggy, but then again, that totally defies the whole concept of the pie floater right? 😛

Bakery on O'Connell

The Bakery on O’Connell has recently just moved ‘down the road’ as they have outgrown their original premises, with the new location being more spacious and open as well as boasting more seating (benches, booths, bar seating) for patrons inside and outside the bakery. The bakery itself is busy around the clock, whether it’s 1pm or 1am. The kitchen pumps out over 200 products on site throughout the day so you’re guaranteed freshly baked goodies always; pick from savoury pastries, quiches and breads to sweet treats of cakes, slices and donuts–I hear their vanilla slices and donuts are worth the calories!

I’ve been around a lot longer than you D and a pie floater is still on my ‘to do’ list. One day!
