Chicken & Pig, Adelaide

Chicken & Pig, a new city lunch haunt which has lines filtering out the door during lunch peak hour has made its presence known on Pirie Street which as of late, has had a new breath of fresh air with other popular haunts all sitting side by side (Osteria Oggi and Abbots and Kinney).

I avoided the busy lunch crowd and got in early whilst staring at the menu above and gawking at the delicious meats and salad on offer through their display. Luckily, the staff were happy to explain how it all worked and it was pretty simple. You have two options, bread roll ($8.50) or salad. The bread roll option is the Italians version of a Vietnamese banh mi thit with your choice of meat and either shredded cabbage or lettuce with either red or green sauce. As for the salad option, minus the delicious carbs–is a choice of wood oven cooked meats–lamb, chicken or pork. As I’m usually quite indecisive, I asked the staff what their favourite was and went along for the ride. A salad with pork, awesome crackling included, a choice of 3 salads from the 5 or 6 they had on offer and a squeeze of red chipotle or green herb salsa sauce.

Take away is the only option here, but fear not, the folks at Chicken & Pig have thought ahead. The take away box with your delicious goodies actually fold out like a plate to make it easier for you to eat and carve up the goodness with the provided plastic cutlery… but the plastic cutlery didn’t cut it for me, it required quite a bit of work trying to cut through the crackling, carrots and broccoli with the knife bending in all directions! I guess I needed to burn some calories whilst I breathed this rather healthy and delicious lunch down. Balance right? Salads of choice included heirloom carrots, corn and black garlic dressing; Spanish lentils, sweet potato, vincotto and pepita; and kale, broccoli and smoked almonds with red chipotle sauce. Seriously, a good, tasty lunch option with large portion sizes–plentiful and very filling; and the meat was juicy, tender and incredibly flavoursome. I’ve also heard that their bread rolls are a delight too!

Get to it and get there early to avoid missing out!

      You’ll just have to organise a day off on a week day and make it a foodie crawl in the CBD! 😉
