Sydney bites: Mary’s CBD, Bourke Street Bakery and Aqua S

Some essential Sydney bites that I had cross off my list during my time there a few months back!

Mary’s CBD

Mary's CBD
Mary’s burger; $10.00

Mary’s was making waves in Sydney with their popular Newtown burger bar, seeing them selling countless delicious looking burgers and fried chicken. As their popularity grew, they opened up a hole in the wall kinda joint in the middle of the CBD, which made it easier for me to get to! I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into one of their burgers and opted for the classic Mary’s burger with Mary’s sauce, tomato sauce, tomato, lettuce, onion, cheese and beef layered between two slices of bun bread. It really wasn’t the most attractive burger I laid eyes on and the taste was pretty standard too. My expectations were obviously set too high in this case, but overall, a decent burger with a juicy filling and flavourful beef patty.

Bourke Street Bakery

Bourke Street Bakery

At last, I got to Bourke Street Bakery and finally got to try their extremely popular and famous ginger brulee tart!

Bourke Street Bakery
Ginger brulee tart; $5.50
White chocolate, passionfruit & meringue tart; $5.50

The aim was to just get the brulee tart, but the meringue tart was calling me to order it too. Ha! I got both for take away and as they had been in the sun for a wee bit too long, they were bordering on ‘wet’, melty and sloppy by the time I sunk my teeth into them. Still good but not a very good indication on how good they may have been if I chomped them down as soon as they were bought. The ginger brulee tart still shone through with its flavour whilst the passionfruit and meringue tart had a really intense and fruity flavour which complemented well with the white chocolate. Well worth a visit for sweet tooths and pastry lovers out there.

Aqua S

Aqua S
Sea Salt and English Breakfast Tea soft serve; $3.80 small cup

Instagram exploded with colourful photos of Aqua S’ soft serve cones and cups with fluffy clouds of fairy floss, rainbow speckled popping candy sprinkles, sweet airy popcorn and a toasted marshmallow. I knew I had to make a visit there! Flavours are updated every fortnight, with the original of Sea Salt being a permanent fixture on their menu. During my visit, they had the English Breakfast Tea flavour, so I got the half and half without the bells and whistles in a cup. Surprisingly, delicious. A subtle milky tea flavour, not too sweet with a fragrant tea permeating through the ice cream, the sea salt was strangely tasty too. Sweet, yet pangs of salt every now and then. Definitely a playful dessert for the palate.
