We finally made our way to Luigi Delicatessen on Flinders Street after hearing so much good things about it, so we were excited to see what was on offer.
Luigi Delicatessen is located on the edge of the city fringe, still in the CBD, yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle with plenty of street car parking surrounding the delicatessen. The place is small, casual but inviting. Luigi, the man himself, introduced himself to us and asked us what we felt like for the day and then suggested that he recommend us some goodies… almost like a ‘feed me’ option. We let him take the reigns and got to sample a few of the popular dishes from their menu at the time.
Oh hellooOooOOOO Neapolitan mussels with a side of crusty bread to soak and mop up all that saucy goodness. So much yum. Plump and juicy mussels swimming in a pool of vibrant and flavourful sauce, we did not leave a drop of that sauce behind!
Then a platter of ‘smaller’ sized pastas came out. A great selection as we had the opportunity to try a bit of everything.
Spaghetti vongole, spaghetti with octopus and spaghetti with crab
The vongole, tick. The octopus, another tick. And the crab, tick.
Surprisingly, the top pick from the lot, the vongole! Simple, clean and bright flavours with juicy pippis all tossed in al dente spaghetti pasta. Just a little bowl full of hearty yummy carby goodness.
PS. order your coffees after your meals so not to spoil your palette whilst eating! 😉 Thanks for the tip Luigi.
Luigi Delicatessen offers a fusion of Mediterranean food with healthy and gluten free options for breakfast, morning tea, lunches and afternoon snacks. The food is good, really good, but I think the downside will have to be the price. Our total bill came to a startling $80 which included 2 sparkling waters and no wine or coffee. That was one pricy lunch that certainly burned a hole in our wallets when we were initially after a ‘cheap feed’… ha!
